2016 CCMGA Winter Party

The 2016 CCMGA Winter Party was quite a success. The new officers for 2017-18 were installed, Master Gardeners In-Training were certified as full Master Gardeners, our host, Lori Bowling, guided us in making wreaths and we enjoyed a lot of great food. Our attendance was over 20 and everyone had a great time. Our group photographer, Victor Simpson, got some great shots of the event.

Thanks to CCMGA Photographer Victor Simpson.  More of his photos of the 2016 Winter Party are available HERE - https://goo.gl/photos/GXoF5jxLrnTaWAiX9

Taking better photos of our gardens – November 10 meeting

We had an outstanding education session at our November 10 meeting in which local photography buffs, Tim Hardesty and Joe Browning gave us great advice on shooting our gardens.  Regardless of our photographic ability, gardening interest or the type of camera we have, we all came away inspired to take more pictures of our gardens.  Joe & Tim have given us their handouts that are available by clicking the links below:
In the business portion of our meeting we discussed the WVMG service and education requirements and the accompanying changes in bylaws that we will be making.  We approved the 2016 budget and learned more about the upcoming MGIT classes.  We had an update on the 2016 CCMGA meeting schedule and announced that a caravan to the Boyd County Extension Office will leave Enslow Park Presbyterian Church at 10:15 for our December 5 meeting/wreath making/Christmas party.  Meat will be provided for the Christmas party but members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share.  Our evening closed with an optional educational session on using the CCMGA website.
Connie will have our meeting minutes posted to the website soon.

Plans for December 6 CCMG Christmas Party

Hey, everybody!

This month's meeting was small but lively. We had a general discussion of gardening issues--pests (living and nonliving), pest control (cats rock!), bees, their role and their prognosis for survival, cool plant adaptations . . . you name it, we hit it. It was fun.

We discussed the December meeting that is to be held in Catlettsburg on Saturday, December 6 at the Boyd County Extension Office. We need an RSVP from you by December 1st in order to prepare! Those who know where the office is can meet there in Catlettsburg on December 6 at 11:00 a.m.; those who would like to caravan will need to be at Enslow Park Presbyterian Church in order to depart at 10:30 a.m.

Please let us know how many (including yourself and an adult guest) will be coming. Please bring a side dish that will be sufficient to serve 6 to 8 people. If you'd like to make a wreath, Lori Bowling will have the materials there. Wreaths will be $10.00 each--some people have made two in the past, so if you'd like to do that, just bring twenty bucks. :-)

There will be door prizes as usual. Lori said she'd be happy to do an artificial wreath-making demo for us as well, which is awesome. If we can learn to make nice wreaths from something other than evergreen cuttings, we can sell them at the Wild Ramp in different seasons to continue that project and fundraiser. We're also planning to make a few extra wreaths to take to the Ramp that week as previews of our wreath-making demo the following weekend.

Speaking of the Wild Ramp wreath-making project, it's moving right along! Here's a request from that project group for all of you. Is anyone planning to trim up their evergreens now? The wreath-makers would love to have things like fresh holly cuttings with berries on them and limbs with pine cones. If you're planning to do any pruning, wait (if you can) for just a bit longer and either bring those cuttings with you on December 6 or bring them to the Wild Ramp the morning of December 13. Those would be most appreciated!

That event is already being advertised by the Ramp as a demonstration, and a number of their Facebook followers are already planning to attend. Hopefully we can use this as an excellent opportunity to tell people more about the Cabell County Master Gardeners program. MGITs, remember that you need 30 volunteer hours by May 1, 2015, so if you'd like to participate in this project, please contact us ASAP and we'll add you to the roster.

Our last bit of EXCELLENT news is that we now appear to have nominees for all the officer positions for the next term. Woohoo! This is a great load off our minds, and I think the group that's coming in is going to do a *fabulous* job over the next couple of years. Let's all plan to pitch in and help make it the best experience we possibly can for them!

Again, please RSVP to ccmgemail@gmail.com absolutely no later than December 1 for the December 6 meeting/party! Hope to see everyone there. :-)

Take care everybody,

Wendy
